The Academic English Department offers classes for non-native English speakers who want to pursue a certificate or degree on an EdCC Pathway. We offer courses focusing on academic reading, writing, critical thinking, and editing as well as further study of grammar, development of college-level vocabulary, and practice with speaking and listening skills.

English Placement Testing determines a student’s level and initial course placement. Non-native English speakers should take the LOEP English Placement Test in the Testing Center in Mountlake Terrace Hall, Room 152. The ACCUPLACER Test will not determine placement into AENGL classes. Students must show their permits or test results to their AENGL instructors the first day of class.

AENGL 090 - READING FOR COLLEGE

For nonnative English speakers who need academic reading and college success strategies to begin college courses with confidence. Students will be assessed on college-level reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Prerequisite: Placement by permit or test results.

Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology of the heart and conduction system. Techniques for performing 12 lead ECGs and recognition of normal cardiac rhythms. New students must have their math skills assessed before they register for mathematics classes. To arrange for an assessment, visit the Testing Center in Mountlake Terrace 152 or call 425.640.1546. It is also critical that students take prerequisite classes prior to taking the more advanced classes. They will be dropped from classes if they do not demonstrate to their instructor by the third day of the quarter that they have satisfied the prerequisite(s). Students who have obtained a 2.0 or better in an advanced course, cannot then take a lower level math class without instructor permission.

For courses requiring a graphing calculator, instruction will be provided using the TI-83 or TI-84. If you already have another calculator, consult your instructor.

Mathematics - Individualized

In order to support the needs of a variety of student we offer self-paced math courses. Students can register for 2, 3, 4 or 5 credits to either complete a course from the previous term or start a math class. Students meet in the Math Center with an attendance requirement.

For Math 47/77/87, All five credits of Individualized Mathematics courses must be completed within 12 months to count as a prerequisite.

Math 97 must be completed within 2 consecutive quarters to count as a prerequisite for Math 141. See www.edcc.edu/math for further details.

Registration and course changes are permitted (see instructor) the first seven weeks of the quarter (six weeks in the summer). When a student completes a course they can enroll and begin in the next course in the sequence.

Textbooks should not be purchased until correct placement has been determined. Note: An additional fee is collected for classes offered in the Math Center.

Providing supportive services for people is at the core of the Social and Human Services program. Classes prepare students to work in behavioral health services such as mental health, addictions or co-occurring illnesses, with families in school districts or their communities or with children and youth in schools or agencies. Classes are also listed under Family Support Studies (FSS).

SHS 100 - CAREER SUCCESS HUMAN SVC

This course is designed to enhance student success and transition into or return to college within the human services field. It emphasizes self-assessment, goal-setting, effective study habits, campus resources and education planning as well as exploration of career development and opportunities within human services. Additional topics include diversity, team building, wellness, academic honesty, and the use of online tools to aid in academic success. Prerequisite: Placement into ENGLP 093 or AENGL 093.

Introduction to misuse of and addiction to psychoactive drugs. Includes history, theories, current research and treatment practices, and the nature of successful recovery as well as prevention concepts.
